  13. <p>   There is an evil chess move behind the allegedly mild
  14. sentences for leaders of the 1989 Chinese student movement.
  15. According to the [official] announcement, the defendants were
  16. punished lightly because they had done a valuable service to the
  17. security services. Everybody knows what that means: They either
  18. denounced others while in prison or provided the police with
  19. incriminating evidence. It cannot be proved whether that is
  20. true, and if it is, we will probably never know under what
  21. circumstances they were "persuaded' to do so...But the report
  22. about collaboration with the police, true or not, will have the
  23. consequences that no one will ever again trust those leaders,
  24. and everyone will avoid contact with them. In effect, the
  25. Chinese authorities have made sure that the leaders of the 1989
  26. movement will never lead another one.
